Today’s soundtrack selection goes to:
‘Peer Pressure’ – Jon Brion
Film: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is underrated.
It is underrated because as a romantic film, it goes against the traditional “boy meets girl” scenario, thanks to director Michel Gondry.
It is underrated because this is one of the best Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet performances you’ll see.
It is underrated because of the amazing supporting cast of Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood, Kirsten Dunst and Tom Wilkinson.
But last and not least, it is underrated because of its beautiful score by Jon Brion.
Despite the songs being very short, Jon Brion captures the quirky emotion of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Each song takes the audience on a journey through the romantic life of Joel (Carrey) and Clementine (Winslet). Their relationship breaks down and they both undergo a procedure to erase each other from their memories. But what the film beautifully acknowledges is that not all memories are bad and some are worth fighting for.
‘Peer Pressure’ articulates that beauty with a haunting and sentimental nostalgia.
