Hello 2017. Hopefully this year will be better than the last…
Anyway as it’s a brand new year, there’s brand new films to look forward to. So here are my top ten films I’m excited to see in 2017.
10) T2 Trainspotting
UK Release: 27th January 2017
Of course there’s always a worry when it comes to sequels, especially if it’s a twenty year gap! This could go either way but it’s great to see the gang back together. It’s also a bit misleading calling it T2 and there’s no Terminators to be seen 🙂 …
9) John Wick: Chapter 2
UK Release: 17th February 2017
The first John Wick film was a revelation. A simple premise with a badass execution! So of course when the sequel was announced I was all in. From the look of the trailer, it’s looks mental.
8) Logan
UK Release: 3rd March 2017
This is going to be emotional. This will be the last time Hugh Jackman will play Wolverine. Judging from the trailer, it finally looks like we’re going to get an 18 certificate Wolverine film.
7) Alien: Covenant
UK Release: 19th May 2017
GAME OVER MAN!!! Ridley Scott returns back to his Alien roots. Now I’m in the minority as I loved Prometheus (faults and all) but I hope the story about the Engineers are not abandoned. Looking forward to being scared again.
6) Wonder Woman
UK Release: 2nd June 2017
I know DC have been inconsistent with their films but there’s a lot to be hopeful. Female lead and director, it could provide a different perspective in the superhero genre. Let’s be honest, Wonder Woman was arguably one of the best things in Batman v Superman. The comic book world only asks for one thing – PLEASE BE GOOD, PLEASE BE GOOD, PLEASE BE GOOD x INFINITY.
5) Spider-Man: Homecoming
UK Release: 7th July 2017
I love this trailer! Marvel looks like they have nailed down the Spider-Man / Peter Parker attitude. Plus Robert Downey Jr. is in it doing what he does best, in a Shane Black kind of way.
4) Blade Runner 2049
UK Release: 6th October 2017
Blade Runner is one of my favourite sci-fi films ever made. This looks absolutely beautiful. Ridley Scott may be only producing the sequel but Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario, Prisoners) has shown he’s more than capable for the job. This film will definitely be an IMAX watch.
3) War For the Planet of the Apes
UK Release: 14th July 2017
The third and final film of the Planet of the Apes reboots. Both Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes have been surprisingly good. Both films have found a balance between the Summer blockbuster tropes and the emotional depth with Caesar. Can it be third time lucky and end on a high? We’ll just have to find out.
2) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2
UK Release: 28th April 2017
Baby Groot…that is all. See you on the 28th.
1) Star Wars: Episode 8
UK Release: 15th December 2017
Yes Star Wars Episode 8 takes the top spot. Given how much The Force Awakens left us on a cliffhanger on so many different levels, it will be interesting to know where the story picks up with Rey and Finn.
Honourable Mentions:
Dunkirk
La La Land
The LEGO Batman Movie
Ghost in the Shell
Fast 8
