Top Ten Music Tracks on Empire

top-10

It’s top ten time and today it’s all about Empire.

Empire is one of my favourite shows on television right now.  With brilliant drama and characters, one of the most attractive things about the show is the music – created and produced by Timberland with the help of Ne-Yo for series 2.  Fun, inventive and catchy, I would even argue that the tracks performed on the show are better than the songs you hear in the pop charts!

With the show coming back from its mid-season break at the end of the month, sit back and relax – here are my favourite music tracks from Empire.

10) “Powerful” – Jussie Smollett and Alicia Keys

Just like the title, the song is powerful.  A positive and soulful song about people standing together through times of need and standing up for change.  Featuring my favourite singer, Alicia Keys, her collaboration with Jussie makes this an easy choice to feature in the top ten.

9) “Can’t Truss ‘Em” – Yazz

Hip-Hop at its best and one of the best tracks to come out of series 1 thanks to the energetic talent of Yazz.

8) “Boom Boom Boom Boom” – Terrence Howard and Bre-Z

With an addictive beat and Terrence Howard rapping, this song epitomizes everything about Lucious Lyon as a character.

7) “Shake Down” – Terrance Howard and Mary J. Blige

It might not be as big as some of the other tracks on Empire but I love it.  Featuring Mary J. Blige, Terrence Howard shows off his softer side.

6) “Keep It Movin” – Serayah McNeill and Yazz

Another brilliant track from series 1.  Highlighting the collaborative work between Serayah and Yazz, this was the song that made me fell in love with the show.

5) “What is Love” – V. Bozeman

It’s a song that kicks off the entire show.  No words necessary.  Enjoy the song and Bozeman’s emotional delivery.

4) “Ain’t About the Money” – Jussie Smollett and Yazz

If you thought the songs couldn’t get any better, you was wrong and this is one of the signature tracks in series 2.

3) “Good Enough” – Jussie Smollett

As a gay man, Jamal’s relationship with Lucious has always been rough.  Pulling on your heart strings, “Good Enough” is a song about acceptance and seeking approval.

2) “Heavy” – Jussie Smollett

I prefer the live version but this is still a good song.  It perfectly describes Jamal’s state of mind during S2 as he manages the affairs at Empire.

1) “You’re So Beautiful” –  Jussie Smollett, Yazz, Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson

If you need a feel good track, then look no further than this.  It’s a song that celebrates beauty in all shapes and sizes.  I can’t think of a better track to top this list.

Honourable Mentions:

And if the songs don’t convince you how good this show is…there’s always Cookie!
