ONE WAY OR ANOTHER – WILLIAM MUST BE ADDRESSED
Who is William you say? Well William is Mulder and Scully’s child. He was given up to adoptive parents for protection from the alien colonists who view William as their potential leader to bring forth the invasion in 2012. This revelation coincided with Mulder disappearing in Season 9 (David Duchovny left the show during that time only for him to return in the finale) where if he stayed with Scully and their newborn child, the colonists would kill him in fear that he would raise his son to fight against the colonists. Are you still reading? Good because The X-Files went all Terminator mode in Season 9!
Whatever your opinion is on Mulder and Scully’s child, William needs to be addressed. To ignore him would be a disaster. While we all may have this idea that William (with his Clark Kent Superman like powers) being the saviour (or destructor) of Earth, it doesn’t have to be as simple as that and I don’t think the writers will use that typical stereotype. I think they would go down a different route. What if his half-human/half alien DNA contained the natural antibodies to stop any viral outbreak? The alien colonist’s interest in William could be out of curiosity because the nature of how he was conceived is still a mystery – and that’s how you address one of the matters. Did Mulder and Scully do it the old fashion way? Did exposure to the black oil virus change Mulder and Scully’s DNA? After her abduction in Season 2 which left her barren, did Scully’s contact with an alien artefact heal her? Or did a certain chain-smoking b*stard had a hand in it (watch the episode En Ami from Season 7).
Another thing with William is the potential reunion with his birth parents. If there was one disappointment with the series finale is that when Mulder came back out of hiding and Scully was about to break the news to him about their son, Mulder already knew – because Skinner told him! It’s unclear whether Skinner may have unintentionally let it slip out or what kind of mental state Mulder was in when he was told, but somehow we missed a golden opportunity to see our heroes’ true reaction. The Season 10 comics are naturally addressing this but if there was a scene in the film where they explain to their son who he is, the sacrifices they made for him and the impact that his adoption had on their relationship, the scenario would be perfect. It doesn’t have to be melodramatic but it would give Mulder and Scully a clear sense of redemption.
